CrossFit-'tude

Thursday, June 30, 2011 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

CrossFit is more than just the physical aspect, it's more than the sense of community you get when everyone suffering alonside you still cheers you on.   There is a huge psychological component to this that can't be overstated.
First we have positivity and perseverance.  These are what fight against the self-doubt and negativity and scream You CAN Do It...what ever "it" may be.  If you fail this time, so what?  Work to improve and succeed in the future.  This is not just mindless excercise where you just show up, move around, then go home.  This is "training", a focused process with immediate objectives, and long term goals, and ANYONE can be the next bad A firebreather if they put in enough effort.
I know for a fact that around here, the only thing that matters is coming in and doing your best!  You give that to Coach Paul and he will give you the world, and our community will give you their repect.  Egos do not survive in CrossFit.

Next we have grit.  The flip side of CrossFit-'tude.  Any kind of effective serious training, is to prepare you for the unexpected and sometimes undesired, like a physical confrontation or carrying an injured person to safety.  When preparing for this kind of thing, it is important for your training to reflect this harsh reality as much as possible.  This is why they yell at you in military training; why you spar;  why you learn to shake off a hit in martial arts; why we carry heavy sandbags and swear in CrossFit.  Heck...anytime I do a Freakin crazy hard WOD, you'll hear a few colorful words out of my mouth between reps, sorry.  BTW...studies have shown that swearing and music actually improve pain tolerance. (but I'll never tell my kids that!)  Life is gritty, unaccomadating and unforgiving.  You need to be able to adapt and mentally prepare for that, because when s*!#  hits then fan you don't have time to catch up.

Combine these traits and you have CrossFit.  You can lift that weight sitting infront of you - maybe not today, maybe not even next month, but one day you will.  Now maybe your at the box, mid WOD, sweating your butt off, and the puke bucket is looking more and more inviting.  Guess what?  The person right next to you is in the same boat, so push each other and make a new friend.  After all, misery loves company.

So where does the 'grit' tie in?  It's that sense of defiance, the will to live, the drive to go all or nothing and shatter the obstacles in your path.  We are here training for life, putting ourselves through substantial physical discomfort for the sake of improvement.  And there will come a time when you need to think...'to hell with it!."  Get angry with it and into your raw aggression.  Believe me, it's the only way to keep going when you step up to a PR.  And that grow-or-die mentallity does wonders in life.

Freedom From Emotional Eating

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 Stacey Baker 2 Comments

My guess is you want to be lean and happy, not lean and miserable.  Anytime you clean up your diet, you need to allow yourself enough room so you don't feel deprived.....yet demand enough restraint so you get the results you want.  Using food for nonphysical reasons becomes a problem when you do it as a way to cope with stress or negative emotions AND if you do it frequently or unconsciously.
Emotional eating is pretty simple and centers on three issues:
1.  You eat mindlessly and impulsively, without thinking first.
2.  You eat for reasons other than your physical needs.
3.  You hold beliefs about food that don't help you move towards your goals.
That heart of the matter is that we sometimes eat for the wrong reasons and might not even realize it.
Why do we eat when we don't physically need to?
-boredom (looking through all the cupboards at home)
-to socialize (going out with friends)
-to recapture a feeling or a memory
-to celebrate a special occasion
-to fill a void or need (This is huge for me)
-to feel good ( 5-6 brownies if I'm really frustrated)
-to feel safe
-as a reward ( after a long day of work)
-out of habit (eating while watching a favorite tv show))
Sometimes eating socially is perfectly appropriate, birthdays, holidays, weddings, etc.  But on the other hand, bingeing home alone after a stressful day is not.  You know almost every person I have talked to about diet has told me they have used food, one time or another, to help cope with with stress or depression.  (Yes, me too!) The irony is that emotional hunger can NEVER be satisfied with food.
Here's how I can tell the difference between emotional and physical hunger
*Physical hunger builds up slowly, starting with a tiny grumble in your belly, growing to full blown hunger paings.  Emotinal hunger develops suddenly.
*With physical hunger, you can wait if you have to.  Emotional hunger seems to demand intense, immediate satisfaction.
*Physical hunger usually appears about 3 hours after eating a meal or snack.  Emotional hunger can happen at anytime.
*Physical hunger is a general desire for food.  Emotional hunger is usually a desire for a specific food.
*After eating for physical hunger, the hunger goes away.  After emotinal eating, the hunger still remains.
*After eating for physical hunger, you get a sense of satisfaction.  After eating for emotional reasons, you feel guilty.
-Be aware of your eating behaviors
-Watch out for your emotinal eating triggers
-Stop the behavior as soon as you realize whats happening
-Replace the old emotinal eating habits with new ones
-Make new beliefs about food and the right reasons for eating.

I have a challenge for you. For the next week, see if you can tell the difference between your emotional eating and physical eating.  Keep not only a food journal but also a record of your emotions when you eat.You will be amazed at what you will learn about yourself.

What Can 2 Months Of CrossFit Do For You?

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

This is Micah....a fellow CrossFitter....and my nephew :0).  This is his crossfit journey in his own words.

^^^This is what it has done for me...^^^
Well there it is folks! It's been a little over two months now, so I figured it was time to give everyone a visual of what all these silly flog posts add up to. Besides, nobody really wants to read about what you're doing, they just want to see results. So here they are. I don't have know exactly what I weighed in the first pictures, but I'm probably down a good 10-15 pounds, and that's with the lean muscle I've been putting on. I'm doing pull-ups now, I'm running further without feeling exhausted, I'm much more flexible, and my overall day-to-day activities have improved tremendously. And these are just the things I have noticed! But I think the best part of this whole thing is that I have found something that works! Sure I was doing great just going to the gym running and lifting, but that got SO boring! I haven't had a boring day yet doing CrossFit. Everyday is a new challenge that kicks the hell out of you and leaves you in a sweaty pile on the ground smiling. It's awesome!! I want to thank everyone from CrossFit IoTA for all the support and encouragement that they provide! It makes a world of difference to walk into that box and be surrounded by amazing people who encourage you to be your best! My beautiful wife and Team Darwin teammate Carlie is itching to get back at it so bad, she's scratching at the walls. She has come along way with me so watch for her update in the near future! Until then, keep reading!
Check out Micah and Carlies flog "Team Darwin Crossfit"

You can teach an old dog new tricks

YES!
Elisabeth WOD
21-15-9
Clean squat 65#
Ring dips

Miranda Oldroyd is my hero...I wish my ring dips looked like this....

This is the first time I have ever done this workout, let alone RX it!  My time was 16: something...I didn't really care.  It was pretty tough.
But thanks to coach Tami, I was able to correct some mistakes in my clean-squat technique.  It's such a great benefit to have someone watch over you to help you do the best job you can.
As for ring dips...ONE at a time...Yup....Thats how I did them...and that wasn't easy either.
I don't like to talk myself up... but I'm pretty proud of myself right now.  See you can teach an old dog new tricks!
