You know you’re a CrossFitter when…

Monday, March 26, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

I guess I must have been using some CrossFit lingo at work the other day.  I was comparing scores with a couple of crossfitters from another box.  We were talking about a WOD and how we both hated Karen...from the look on the womans face behind us, I'm pretty sure she thought I was talking about spitting on a girl... or something like that.
It made me think about how we use our CrossFit lingo.  It's kinda funny when you think about it.

You know you’re a CrossFitter when…
  • You tell a woman after the workout, “You’re a freaking beast!”, and she wholeheartly says “Thank you!”
  • Your wedding registry includes bumper plates.
  • You don’t own a tractor but you own tractor tires.
  • Helping people move homes turns into a metcon WOD.
  • You pick your cubicle at work because of its hand-stand practice potential.

CrossFit Open WOD 12.4

Monday, March 19, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

The 4th WOD was CRAZY!
12 min AMRAP
150 wallballs  (9', 14#)
90 Double Unders
30 Muscle Ups
Total Reps: 204
This was a tough wod for me.  My fastest recorded Karen time is 6:38, so I thought I would have plenty of time to do my dbls.  It became pretty clear that I haven't had great form becasue the 150 wall balls took me nearly  3 min. more...9 1/2 min.  But I am proud to say...I kept perfect form the way through.  I squatted to the correct depth, I hit the wall and the line.
On man!  Were my arms hammered!.  Most everyone I talked with said their legs hurt but mine didn't... I guess this means I have more "form" to work on.
Anyhow. here is how my ranking goes:

               Region                                                              World

Open 1                 893 / 1444   61 %                                            11809 / 19936  59%

Open 2                 681 / 1342  50%                                                 8448 / 18302  46%

Open 3                 669 / 1233     54%                                           7749/ 16545   46%

Open 4                 531 /  1106  48%                                                6786 / 14826  45%
I got looking at the scores,  did you notice how the total number of athletes keeps declining?  I feel good that I am still hanging there.
In fact, if you take the total # of women that started and compare where I'm at... I'm in the top  631 / 1444  40% region                                  6968 / 19936  34%
...of the female athletes that started the WOD's.  That pretty darn cool!

Athlete Profile – Angie Belnap

Saturday, March 17, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

Tell us about yourself…. Hubby (Dave) and I moved from Northern Idaho to Utah in 2003. I taught school (3rd Grade) for 7 years and was a parent educator for 2 years. We have 3 children. Jayce is 9, Hannah is 5, and Ian just turned 1!
What is your day job? Mommy/ part time child care provider
How were you introduced to CrossFit? Daeci Burr and Mindy Anderson… I came for the 3 free times so I could show them that I would hate it and they didn’t have to invite me anymore. Been coming ever since!
What is your favorite WOD or Lift? Love the Tabata WOD’s
What is your favorite skill/movement that you have learned at CrossFit IoTA? I’ve thought about this Forever… the answer… none, they are all too d@%# hard! I’ve always love sit ups and love them even more the way CF does them. My back/neck used to hurt if I did too many and with the Ab Mat I feel like I only use my abs without straining my back/neck.
How has CrossFit changed your life? It has been a love/hate relationship. Some days I feel really old! Some days I dread going and then leave loving it. It has taught me that I can do things I never thought possible. I’ve ignored my physical self for so long that I have a lot of catching up to do. The time it takes to get back into shape is the “hate” part, the process is the “love” part. Seeing others at the box make improvements (ie, learn to do pull ups, toe to bar, double unders, etc) is so motivating and exciting. It’s nice to have a part of my day where I’m not just focused on changing diapers and running kids around!
What keeps you motivated and coming back for more? Honestly, I’d love to be one of those tough women who say “the workouts”, but it is the friends I’ve made at CF that keep me coming back. I love going in to workout, gripe about the workouts, swear (on occasion), and laugh with all my new/old friends!
What’s something you know now that you wish someone would have said to you when you started CrossFit? I’m sure someone said it to me, but I didn’t process it completely… Results Take Time. I thought I’d go for a couple of months and instantly be back to my skinny self. Been going for almost 8 months and that skinny self is still trying to emerge! Now I can add strength to my goals and not just skinny!
One word to describe me would be… Spit-Fire (so says the hubby)
I have always wanted… to visit Australia
Outside of the gym, I like to… read (LOVE my book club), take my kids to fun activities (swimming lessons, gymnastics, storytimes…), go out with friends, watch movies with the family
Three things you would always find in my fridge… milk, eggs, cheese
Something nobody knows about me or would be surprised to know about me… I’ve always wanted a frog tattoo
Favorite physical activity outside of CFI… Volleyball
Favorite place to eat in Cache Valley … Eating out in general is my Fav, but I really love the pork salad at Cafe Rio
Song(s) that gets me pumped up for a workout… No clue what the title is, but Paul plays it a lot and its hilarious… “I Workout… I’m Sexy and I know it”… something along those lines!
The last thing I ate was… Shredded Wheat
My proudest accomplishment is… My family! Building our family has been an amazing journey. My children have wonderful birth families who have blessed our lives more than words can describe. The relationships I have with my immediate family and my children’s birth families is something I cherish and find most satisfaction from in my day-to-day life.
My six month goal is… Be able to run the TOU Half Marathon without dying
My favorite workout attire is… Capri workout pants/Tshirt
My favorite workout partner(s)… My sister, Cerissa! Love that she has joined. Also, Mindy, Julie, Lacee, Shaley, Steph (hate it when you count to 5 when I’m resting and force me to use the blue band – lol), Saundra, Becca, Jen, Heidi… Oh my, the list could go on. Love all of you!!
If you created a WOD and named it after yourself what would the workout be? I already have one named after me :) !
Angie
100 pull ups
100 push ups
100 sit ups
100 squats
For time!

Stacey's "How to Avoid Falling Off The Wagon"

Tuesday, March 13, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

Now that the nutrition challenge is in the rear view mirror...what happens now?  Here some of the pitfalls I encountered along my way.
Here are the 8 biggest reasons I tend to fall off the wagon with new eating habbits.
1.NO FOCUS:  I didn't set goals...I didn't put my goals in writing and I didn't keep my goals in mind everyday (by reading them, affirming them, mentally picturing them).
2.  NO PRIORITIES:  I may have set a goal...but I didn't make it a priority.  So my goal was to get a 6-pack, but I still went to McDonalds for lunch...My eating-out was a greater priority than a flat stomaach.
3.  NO SUPPORT SYSTEM:  I tried to go it alone.  No buddy system, family, spouse, coaches to turn to for information and emotional support when things got tough.
4.  NO ACCOUNTABILITY:  I didn't track my food, my workouts, my measurements.  I didn't  tell anyone...so I didn't report to anyone and have to show them my results.
5.   NO PATIENCE:  I was only thinking short term...and that's unrealistic. I expected 10 lbs. a week or 5 lbs a week or 3 lbs a week, so I "only" lost 1-2 lbs a week or hit a plateau...and I would give up.
6.NO PLANNING: I winged it.  I walked into a gym, without a plan, without a nutrition strategey, without a weekly plan to workout daily....I just didn't make the time ( I did make excuses, I don't have time, I was in a hurry, there was nothing good to eat, etc).
7.  NO BALANCE:  My diet and training plan was too extreme.  I went all or nothing.  The "I want it now" route instead of the moderate, slow-and-steady pace wins the race route.
8.  NO PERSONALIZATION:  My nutrition and training was someone elses "miracle diet".  It may have worked for my neighbor, but it didn't fit my schedule, my personality, my disposition, my appetite, my life.
So there it is in black and white,  8 mistakes that caused me to fail time and time again.  But that was then and this is now!
Focus, prioritize, get support, be accountable, be patient, plan, balance and personalize.....hmmmm....I wonder where a girl could find all of those...hmmmmm....I know...at Crossfit Iota!  For accountability and support, there is no better community like ours.

BOB DRANK THE KOOL-AID

Bob Harper, trainer for The Biggest Loser has become quite the CrossFit enthusiast! I saw an interview with him in which he stated, ”CrossFit is kicking my ass.” He uses CrossFit workouts on the TV show and although that he can’t actually use the word CrossFit, he did have his team do “Fran” recently; modified of course.

Here's a little Bob Harper entertainment for you....CrossFit style

CrossFit Open WODs

Tuesday, March 06, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

So I have been participating in the CrossFit Games.  It's been fun to see how my scores compare to other athletes around the world.  These are my scores so far:
OpenWOD #1
7 min. burpees: 80
                              Region:   893 / 1444                                  Worldwide:    11809 / 19936
Not a great score but thats okay. I was in the top 61% in the region and top 59% in the world.
Open WOD #2
30 snatch 45#
30 snatch 75#
30 snatch 100#
Max  rep snatch 120#  AMRAP 10 min:
                              Region:    681 / 1342  50%                      Worlwide:    8448 / 18302  46%
ThisI did better.  I had 60 reps complete in 6 1/2 min.  I spent the rest of my time trying to get that 100# bar up...NOT!  I was in the top 50% in the region and the top 46% in the world.
Can't wait to see what the next WOD will bring.....

2012 Throw the Scale Away Challenge Winners...From CrossFit Iota

Sunday, March 04, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

Posted by Coach Paul Crossfit Iota

For the LADIES… 1st – Gina Spackman, 2nd – Nancy Coburn, 3rd – Melissa Feser, 4th – Gail Seamons…But seriously ladies each one of you made amazing changes and I am INCREADIBLY proud of so many who took this challenge on and made so many positive changes, KEEP IT GOING and NEVER GIVE UP!

When this contest started, my motivation was definitely the money–”Guilt-free money”. I knew that I could definitely improve on how I looked because since baby #4, I had kept eating however I wanted which included many sweets! So, why not try?!! I did put away the scale for the first 10 days because I didn’t want to get discouraged. I had been “stuck” at the same weight for the past almost 2 years no matter what exercises I did. I ran 4-5 times a week before starting CrossFit but still had never changed my diet. Crossfit helped me build muscles & I was able to improve on so many levels during my first 7 months but not on the scale. Then after 10 days of the challenge & a dramatic change of diet, I snuck to the scale & to my surprise I had lost around 7 lbs. That couldn’t be right! So, I kept at it! Thanks to my husband Brandon & Angie Sorensen I was able to stick to the zone diet. I would text Angie when I was dying for a sweet & likewise. We exchanged meal ideas & kept constant tabs on each other & also enjoyed many of our free meals together. We both were seeing great results on the scale & in our clothes! That’s what made it fun–to see results in the clothes that you wear or haven’t been able to wear in a while!!! To see improvement (even if it is just a little bit) in the workouts that I did!! Crossfit has been my “out” as a stay-at-home & to be able to succeed has been awesome!! This is not the end because why stop something that is working?! From the time that I started the challenge on Jan. 2nd to the time that I took my picture on Feb. 27th, I was able to lose many inches & a total of 16 lbs! Who knew that eating healthy & exercising could be so rewarding:) Thanks for the Challenge!!! – Gina
Expectations come in all sizes. Expectations at Christmas time are really big. You try with every ounce of sensitivity you have to be able to present just the right gifts to those you love the most. You hope with all your being that you will be able to show just the right amount of enthusiasm for the gifts you receive. When Christmas gifts collide with New Year’s resolutions, expectations reach a whole new level. I expect workouts to be hard, and I expect food to taste good. I expect working out and diets to make me hungry.
Judge at the turmoil in my head when my husband gave me a CrossFit membership for Christmas, Paul announced the “Throw Away Your Scale” challenge, and Tami presented us with the Zone diet.
My first thought was “no expectations, no disappointments.” My more rational thought was “what better time than my first two months at the gym to take on this challenge.”
We actually had to acquire a new scale for the challenge—a food scale. The Zone diet was a fun adventure. We found some great ways to add protein to breakfast, to snack, to eat in general. Since Paul didn’t say throw away your measuring tape, I started out by taking measurements of all my vital places and decided not to tell anyone at work about either CrossFit or the diet. That lasted about two weeks because they started asking what I was doing, did I have cancer?, stuff like that. In two weeks I had experienced a noticeable change in the way my clothes fit. This was exciting! And I was never hungry; in fact, I had to start taking my lunch to work in a grocery bag instead of in my little lunch bag.
I didn’t need the scale to tell me that it was time to get the jeans out of the back of my closet. I didn’t need the scale to tell me when to move up to a 26 lb kettlebell or that I could complete 18 minutes of serious workout. I don’t need the scale to tell me that eating clean and working out are a great combination.
Thanks Russell, for giving me the CrossFit membership. Thanks Paul, for your expertise and dedication to the program. Thanks all you afternoon folks for encouraging and challenging me every day. “You’ve got it, Gail!” Yes, I have. Thank you all very much. – Gail Seamons
