On a personal note...it's been 2 1/2 years since my first nutrition challenge.  I learned good habits that have become 2nd nature to me.  I hope this challenge allowed you to feel the power of being in control.  Welcome to your new life!

Congratulations to ALL of YOU that took on the Throw-Away-The-Scale Challenge!
Making the choice of  1st, 2nd and 3rd will be extremely difficult with all the great success I've seen.  Everyone got out of it exactly what they put into it and there are SO many success stories.
All of you who participated made great nutrition choices and have gained a better understanding about exactly how food affects your body. Everyone did AWESOME and congratulations for taking control of your diets, keep up the good work.
A prize should go to every person who stuck with it, though your true prize is the result of your effort and focus on changing your habits and choosing more wisely, the fuel you put into your body.
I saw some amazing results and it was an absolute pleasure for me to watch you guys lose weight, make gains at the box and be successful overall in the Challenge.

I believe tomorrow is the deadline for your after pics....so be sure to get into the box!

OK...it's official...I signed up for the Crossfit Open.  I did it last year and enjoyed seeing how I compare to other crossfit women of my age.  It was a fun experience.

\ So what are you waiting for!?!

CrossFit games 2012
On February 22, the wait will be over. The CrossFit Games 2012 will be officially underway. Given that 26,000 athletes participated in the 2011 games, It is estimated that the total registrations in 2012 will top 40,000. If you haven’t already done so, you can register here. Bob Harper from The Biggest Loser says that he has signed up:
Bob Harper CrossFit Games 2012

Over a five week period, these 40,000 athletes will compete to qualify for the next round, the regionals. Each of 17 regions worldwide will host the top 60 men and the top 60 women for a three-workout weekend sometime between April 27, 2012 and May 27, 2012. If the math is correct, this would mean that about 5% of the competitors will advance from the open to the regionals.
Each of the regionals will advance the top three men and the top three women to the finals which will be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California July 13-15. This year the prize money for the top male and the top female will be the same as 2011, $250,000 each.

CrossFit Focus

Friday, February 17, 2012 Crissfitgirl 0 Comments

Have you ever noticed HOW you are thinking when you are happiest? Chances are you were focused in thought... zeroing in on ONE thing… like a funny movie, sex… or a workout. And if this is the case for you, you are not alone. As it turns out... researchers have found that people are happiest when their minds are not wandering. They are single-minded, focused on one thing and one thing only. (When the Mind Wanders, Happiness Also Strays from the NY Times)

So how does this relate to CrossFit you ask? For me, the harder and more skill based the workout, the more mental focus and energy it requires, and the happier I am as a result.

I remember being bored, and completely unsatisfied with workouts back in my Globo
Gym days (I won't mention names) … doing 3 sets of 10 for back, bi's and tri's and then hitting the treadmill while reading a book or watching some TV talking about something boring, and needing my mind to wander just to keep it interesting. Do you remember having that sort of Globo Gym experience?

For me, it’s no surprise that CrossFit, in spite of it’s challenge and difficulty, ultimately brings me happiness. It is the one time of the day when I literally have to shut everything out except the work I am doing. And when I've finished the WOD, lying on the ground, out of breath, lungs burning, fore arms tight...am I happy?

YOU BET I AM!

How To Reduce your Bodyfat % in 12 Steps

Monday, February 13, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

How to Reduce Body Fat Percentage in 12 Steps

1. Build more muscle. One of the best ways to reduce body fat is weight training. As you increase lean muscle mass you burn more calories.  (ie; bar work at CrossFit)
2. Eat for great health. When you eat for great health you’re making sure to have the necessary energy to exercise and enjoy your life.
3. Avoid refined carbs. Sugar and other refined carbohydrates, zap your energy, ruin your health and contribute to excess body fat. Stick with fresh fruits and vegetables and other high fiber food.
4. Enjoy your protein. To make sure you reduce fat and not muscle when losing weight, it’s essential to get enough protein. Use low calorie high protein shakes for mini meals. And have fun adding fruit or flavorings.
5. Drink more water. As you up your water intake to at least 8 glasses a day, the less hungry and more refreshed you’ll feel.
6. Increase activity. If you’re eating less calories, low impact physical activity, like walking, swimming and yoga for at least 30 minutes a day, burns fat, builds a strong lean body and helps boost metabolism activity.
7. Know your calories. When we eat unconsciously, calories start adding up. Make sure you’re not storing up more than you burn for energy.
8. Have 4-6 mini meals. Instead of 3 big meals a day, go for 4 to 6 small meals. It helps increase metabolism and burn extra calories.
9. Eat more veggies. Most plain vegetables are so low in calories and so high in fiber content that it’s almost like you’ve eaten no calories at all.
10. Eliminate sodas. Sodas are bad for your health and add unnecessary calories. Learn to love drinking pure, clean, calorie-free water.
11. Enjoy other pleasures. Whenever possible, indulge simple healthy activities that you enjoy (besides eating). Make a list and have fun.
12. Get much stronger. Strength training improves flexibility, increases fitness, strengthens joints and bones, builds muscle and helps reduce fat.  (increase your weight load over time)

Now that you know how to reduce body fat percentage,
the rest is up toYOU. Just add one step at a time and
increase your pace slow and easy.

This is my CrossFit

Saturday, February 11, 2012 Stacey Baker 2 Comments

When I started CrossFit, my motive was to look better. Before I knew it, I quit thinking so much about how I looked and started thinking about how strong I was getting, how many new things I was learning, how much better I felt and how much I looked forward to seeing everyone at the box.
CrossFit Iota became my home away from home. I fell in love with the community, the support, the friendship and the common goal of wanting to be better, not just at CrossFit but at life.

I look forward to seeing each of you everyday. I love watching you reach your goals. I love that I get to be the part of your day when you set aside your fear of trying something new. I love that you show up and do the work and support each other.
Why do you love CrossFit?

Tell us about yourself…. I grew up in Hyde Park and now live in Smithfield. I married my sweet husband Justin 5 years ago. We have two wonderful kids Ava-3 and Elliott-17 months. Ava loves coming to CrossFit. She often wakes me up at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and says, “Mom, it’s time for us to go to the gym.” Usually I can get her to go back to sleep, if not she comes with me. I have been CrossFitting for 6 months now and love it.
What is your day job? I am an RN for Access Home Care and Hospice

How were you introduced to CrossFit? I have a couple of friends that do CrossFit in Logan and love it. I looked up CrossFit online and found IoTA here in Smithfield and came down that Saturday and have been hooked since.
What is your favorite WOD or Lift? Favorite WOD probably Fight Gone Bad. I’m a whimp so I’m not big into lifting.
What is your favorite skill/movement that you have learned at CrossFit IoTA? Pullups.
How has CrossFit changed your life? Everything about CrossFit is so positive I love starting my day there.
What keeps you motivated and coming back for more? I have so much room for improvement and so many skills/movements to learn. I keep coming back because I am addicted.
What’s something you know now that you wish someone would have said to you when you started CrossFit? I wish I had known sooner about the Pull-up workouts on the back board.
One word to describe me would be… Determined
I have always wanted… travel to exotic places.
Outside of the gym, I like to… hang out with my family, run and bake.
Three things you would always find in my fridge… milk, eggs, cheese.
Something nobody knows about me or would be surprised to know about me… I drove forklift at night for 5 years while I went to school.
Favorite physical activity outside of CFI… running
Favorite place to eat in Cache Valley… don’t really have one. Maybe Coldstone- I love Ice Cream!!
Song(s) that gets me pumped up for a workout… Anything fast.
The last thing I ate was… Oatmeal with peanut butter and milk.
My proudest accomplishment is… my kiddos.
My six month goal is… Get my husband to try CrossFit.
My favorite workout attire is… anything DriFit. I am a Nike junkie.
My favorite workout partner(s)… haven’t found anyone I don’t like working out with but love my 6:15 group, Sue and Ronnie thanks for pushing me, Gayle, Chris and Kyle G you guys inspire me.
If you created a WOD and named it after yourself what would the workout be?
15 min AMRAP
10 Pull-ups
15 Burpees
20 KB clean and jerks
25 Box jumps

My CrossFit mantra 2012

Friday, February 03, 2012 Stacey Baker 1 Comments

This is dedicated to my 'girls' at CrossFit Iota

To improve who we are, how we behave,
and the results we acheive
we have to make agreements with ourselves.

There is a Tolec Wisdom Book, "The Four Agreements", that speaks about four codes
of conduct to live by.  It might sound crazy but they also apply to our journey with crossfit.
I want to take on the challenge of putting these four agreements into my life....
....this is my mantra for 2012

Be Impeccable With My Word-  I will speak with integrity.  Say what I mean and be honest.  Being impeccable with my word is the correct use of energy.   I will pursue this with intensity and it will transform my life.
::::With crossfit I will speak lovingly to myself and direct my energy towards purpose and a positive direction.  I need to give myself credit for my effort at each workout.  I can't blame myself  for my letdowns.  I will never speak badly myself, another member of the box, a coach, etc.  My words express my thoughts and my thoughts define me.  I will make a conscious decision to clear the drama and negative talk from my mind and the words out of my mouth.
Don't Take Anything Personally-  nothing other people do is because of me, it's because of themselves.  Whatever I think, whatever I feel, I know it is your problem and not my problem.  It is the way you see the world.  When I really see other people as they are, without taking it personally, I can never be hurt by what they say or do.
::::With crossfit, we are constantly interacting with others and being compared to others.  I can't deny that there is a large social aspect to this way of fitness.  I am constantly being challenged and pushed by others in our community.
Although CrossFit brings out the best in people most of the time, it can also bring some 'not so great' emotions and outbursts.  I will not let myself become hurt or consumed by other peoples words and actions towards me.  Those hurtful words and actions are a direct reflection of that persons outlook and mindset.  They heve personl issues that I am not a part of....so I won't take it personal.
Don't Make Assumptions-  It is interesting how the human mind works.  I have the need to justify everything and explain and understand everything in order to feel safe.  I will find the courage to ask questions and to express what I really want.  I will communicate with others clearly as I can to avoid misunderstanding.  This agreement can transform my life.
::::With CrossFit I must take action and be clear to others and my coaches about what I want. What I want out of this crossfit experience, how I want to be treated and what is on my mind.  I will not gossip and make assumptions about things others tell me.  I will respect other points of view and respect myself enough to be honest with my feelings.  I know we are all different and we all have different expectations and opinions.  I will stop expecting others to know what is going on in my head, and I won't assume that I know what others are thinking and feeling...ever.
Always do My Best-  By doing my best, I am going to live my life intensely, I am going to be productive and I am going to be good to myself.  It is taking action because I love it...not because I am expecting a reward.  I don't need to know or prove anything.  Just to be...to take risk,,,and enjoy life that is all that matters.
::::With CrossFit, doing my best is going to change from moment to moment.  It will be different when I am healthy rather than when I am sick.  But under any circumstance, if I do my best for that moment, I will avoid self-judgement, self-doubt, and self-regret.  My best is not what I could do better in the past or what I should be able to do.  My best is not what my competitor can do or what I will once be able to do.  My best is what I can do during that workout.
I am making a daily commitment,,,I am going to speak highly of myself and others..... I will not take anything personally.....I will communicate clearly to avoid assumptions....I will always do my best.
I will keep my attention only on today,
in the present moment, and do my best to honor
these four agreements everytime I enter my crossfit box
....and every time I exit.

A Good Coach

Thursday, February 02, 2012 Stacey Baker 0 Comments

Coaching. This is what coaching is all about for me.  I hope this will help you to see
WHY I do WHAT I do.

What do you see in the picture above? I see a coach. A good coach; and probably a good friend; post-CrossFit workout.
There is a reason that most CrossFit gyms chose the term “Coach” rather than “Trainer” to entitle their instructors. A coach is so much more than a trainer. And a good coach is a whole other story.
A good coach doesn’t lie to you and tell you that you’re doing great when you’re not. A good coach tells you what you’re doing right, and commends you for it, but then tells you what you need to “work on.”
A good coach does not sacrifice your safety for your ego. He/she will pull you out of the “game” when you are hurt, even if it causes his/her team to “lose”.
A good coach realizes that there are some things that just won’t be fixed overnight. And he/she is patient as you work towards fixing these faults.
A good coach thinks about you long after you leave the gym. He/she thinks about what you’ve done well, how you have made him/her proud, and how you can continue to get better. Sometimes this coach even “drops you a line” to let you know these thoughts.
A good coach can recognize a bad day. A day when you just “don’t have it.” And tells you to take a rest day. It’s not the end of the world…you’ll be back taking names in no time.
A good coach feels your victories and feels your defeats. Ask any coach, in any sport~I guarantee that they’ll confirm this. I’d go as far as saying a good coach would rather lose herself than see you lose.
A good coach is one you fear…not in the sense that you think they’ll hurt you, or penalize you with more burpees; but because you do not want to disappoint him/her.
A good coach will sacrifice his/her training, to make you achieve a desired end.
A good coach will tell you there’s hope–and actually make you believe there is–even when he/she can’t quite find it herself yet.

I never engaged in any kind of sport until my late 30's.  I never met any great coaches and didn't understand the importance of one.  I believe with all my heart that in the the shot time I've been in CrossFit, I have witnessed some of the best coaches ever. Some of these are the ones I have watched
As an individual who didn’t engage in a sport until my mid-twenties, I never got to meet many great coaches, or even understand the importance of one. I firmly believe that in the short time I’ve CrossFitted I have witnessed some of the best coaching in existence. Some of this has been of those who directly coached me, or in simply witnessing other athletes be coach in their “boxes” and at competitions.
